Susceptibility of Staphylococci to Antibiotics

Abstract
The tendency of many bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics has become a problem of ever increasing importance, particularly with staphylococci. For example, it has been found by many physicians and surgeons, that as high as 90 per cent of strains of coagulase positive staphylococci among hospital populations are now resistant to Penicillin.
These resistant strains of staphylococci have caused and alarming number of serious infections. This emphasizes, that improper use of antibiotics can lead to serious consequences and hence. the importance of selecting the correct antibiotic and this can be done by susceptibility test.
Two hundred cases of coagulase positive staphylococci from the superficial surgical infections in the St. Paul¢¥s Hospital, Catholic Medical College, during the period from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 1963, were cultured and antibiotic susceptitility test performed.
As a result, staphylococci were most susceptible to Albamycin, (Novobiocin). Erythromycin and Sygmamycin but most resistant to Penicillin, Chloramphenicol, Streptomycin and Neomycin. Tetracyclines and Kanamycin were of intermediately susceptitle.
